This is the first in a series of paintings highlighting a potter creating something beautiful out of clay. I love the ambiguity here that focuses your attention on his hands. The beauty is that these hands are not "clean". They are marred and dirty and reveal a life of hard work. However, they can create something so beautiful, such as this piece of pottery! I imagine our Lord's hands were not "clean" when He was creating us. I imagine He had to dig a bit in the dirt to create something from nothing. The beauty is, He is willing to get down in the dirt with us to help shape and mold us into something beautiful. This series highlights the scripture that reveals how we are "made by the potter's hands. You are the potter and I am the clay. Mold me. Shape me." (Isaiah 64.8).
